MONDAY 20 & 27 MAY @ 19H30 via Zoom
This is a comprehensive webinar designed to equip swimming teachers and coaches with the knowledge and strategies necessary to support children with Down syndrome in both learn-to-swim and competitive swimming settings. Down syndrome, a genetic condition characterized by cognitive delays, specific physical features, and other health related problems presents unique challenges and opportunities in the swimming environment. This course aims to provide insights into the expected behaviours of children with Down syndrome in swimming, common scenarios encountered, and effective strategies for teaching and coaching and assisting these children.
Children with Down syndrome may exhibit a range of behaviours and characteristics that can influence their swimming experiences. Some common behaviours and characteristics include:
- Sensory Sensitivities
- Communication Challenges
- Motor Skills Development
- Social Interaction
We will tackle how to deal with the above and focus on the importance of recognizing the unique needs and abilities of children with Down syndrome in swimming environments. By understanding their expected behaviours, addressing common scenarios with patience and empathy, and implementing effective teaching and coaching strategies, swim teachers and coaches can create inclusive and rewarding swimming experiences for children with Down syndrome.
